Riria Hotere discusses the United Tribes flag held in the Te Papa collection. This particular flag came to New Zealand with the New Zealand Company in 1839 and first flew over Wellington Harbour (Port Nicholson).

After the Union Jack became our official flag in 1840 Lieutenant-Governor William Hobson forced the New Zealand Company to take down their United Tribes flag at Port Nicholson.
