Te Whiti was a Taranaki leader and prophet. A resistance movement based at Parihaka was led by him and Tohu Kakahi. Te Whiti was arrested following the infamous raid on Parihaka by Armed Constabulary in 1881.
Having struggled financially for some years, the company was in great difficulty by early 1844 in the wake of the Wairau Affair of June 1843, in which more than 20 settlers had been killed in an ill-advised clash with Ngāti Toa.
