Major-General Edward Chaytor

Major-General Edward Chaytor

Edward Walter Clervaux Chaytor (1868-1939) was the commander of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade during the Sinai campaign, 1916-1917. In April 1917 he was promoted to major-general and given command of the Australian and New Zealand (Anzac) Mounted Division, becoming the only New Zealander to ever command an Anzac force at divisional level.

During the final months of the Palestine campaign Chaytor was responsible for operations in the Jordan Valley. The troops under his command - dubbed 'Chaytor's Force' - included the Anzac Mounted Division, 20th Indian Brigade, 1st and 2nd battalions of the British West Indies Regiment, and 38th and 39th (Jewish Volunteers) Royal Fusiliers battalions.

This photograph was taken in Wellington between 1919 and 1922, when Chaytor was GOC New Zealand Military Forces.
