11 May 1840Sheet 8 — The Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Sheet

After collecting signatures on the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) copy of the Treaty of Waitangi in Queen Charlotte Sound, Henry Williams, on board the schooner Ariel, headed further west. He stopped at Rangitoto ki te Tonga (D’Urville Island) on 11 May 1840 and gathered 13 signatures there. The hapū (subtribe) and iwi (tribe) of these signatories was not recorded. Williams, an Anglican Church Missionary Society missionary, stated that the treaty was explained at all the places he visited. The captain of the Ariel, George Thomas Clayton, also witnessed these signings.

These 13 signatories all made unique marks next to their names.

As Major Thomas Bunbury and Captain Joseph Nias of HMS Herald had been given the task of gaining signatures on the Herald (Bunbury) copy of the treaty in the South Island, Williams now sailed to the west coast of the North Island in search of signatories.
