Te Aopururangi signed the Bay of Plenty (Fedarb) sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi at Te Kaha on 14 June 1840. He was from the Te Whānau-a-Te Ehutu hapū (subtribe) of Te Whānau-a-Apanui.
In 1865, senior official Donald McLean described the now-elderly Te Aopururangi as a good example to his iwi because he had not supported the messengers seeking support for the Pai Mārire (Hauhau) movement.
