Nga Tohu

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Rāwiri Whatino signed Te Tiriti at Queen Charlotte Sound on 4 May 1840. He originally lived on the land that is now called Bell Block, before migrating to Marlborough in the 1820s or 1830s. In 1858 he was appointed as a native land assessor.
