Nga Tohu

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Tīkaukau (or Tīkaokao) signed Te Tiriti at Queen Charlotte Sound on 4 May 1840. The identity of this signatory is uncertain. It could be Tīkaukau of Ngāti Tama, who had close links to Ngāti Maniapoto. Another possibility is that it is Tāwhana Tīkaokao (or his father).
