Te Tohe signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi on 26 May 1840 in the Manawatū. This may have been Matiti Te Tohe, of Ngāi Te Upokoiri, who was given land at Pahianui by Te Whatanui. He then gave this land to Te Horohau, who was Hape’s father.
