Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Johann/Annie McHutcheson was born on 28 September 1858 in Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scotland – the daughter of William McHutcheson, an excise officer, and Isabella Phillips. (See 301 Isabella McHutcheson)

She emigrated to Christchurch with her family in 1862 and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her parents in Oamaru.

She married Walter Seth-Smith, a farmer, on 26 September 1893 at her parents’ home and they had two children.

The family lived at Hakatarmea before moving to Ohakune in 1909.

Annie died on 20 September 1939 at Ohakune and Walter died in 1953, they are buried together in the Waikaraka Cemetery.

Annie’s obituary said 'throughout her life she was well known in women’s circles of the Presbyterian Church throughout New Zealand.'
