Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Isabella Ponton Brock was born on 12 June 1853 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland – the daughter of Henry Brock, a farmer, and Eliza Young.

She married Jens Andreas Fischer, a master mariner from Denmark, on 17 June 1879 at Marine Villa, Grangemouth.

They had a son and a daughter when Jens’ ship the Jessie disappeared in 1881 en route to Copenhagen and he was declared drowned.

Their son died in 1884 and Isabella emigrated to New Zealand with her daughter soon after.

She married James Young McIntyre, a farmer, on 23 January 1889 at her brother’s home in Waikoikoi, South Otago.

Isabella and James had four children and when Isabella signed the suffrage petition they were living at Waikoikoi.

They moved to Oamaru in the late 1890s where James died in 1910. Isabella died at Oamaru on 23 December 1930, they are buried together in the Tapanui Cemetery.
