Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Walker was born about 1854 in Ireland.

She married Robert McCutcheon, a labourer, on 24 November 1874 in Omagh, County Tyrone.

They had two sons before they boarded the Timaru in 1878 bound for Otago. The family settled in Lawrence, where Margaret signed the suffrage petition, and they had a further four children. Robert died at their home in 1938 and Margaret died after a long stay at the Lawrence hospital on 10 June 1940.

She 'endured suffering with cheerfulness and fortitude, never complaining and always delighting in the psalms of David...Her interests in sickness and in health were particularly the Presbyterian Church of which she was the oldest member, joining in 1880, and the cause of temperance, to both of which she was devoted'.

Margaret is buried with Robert in the Lawrence Cemetery.
