Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emily Harriet Bicknell was born in Victoria, Australia in 1857 – the daughter of William Bicknell and Emily Harriet Hammond.

She came to New Zealand and married Robert McKeich, a butcher, in 1876.

They had five children, one who died in infancy, and lived at first in Lawrence before moving to Dunedin in 1884.

They moved back to Lawrence in 1888 and this is where Emily signed the suffrage petition.

In 1902 Robert left as part of the 9th New Zealand Contingent to fight in South Africa, he was killed in action later that year.

Emily was left in a poor financial situation and she moved to Dunedin the following year.

Emily died in Dunedin on 2 June 1924, she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
