British assert sovereignty as French head for Akaroa

HMS Britomart arrived at Akaroa, on Banks Peninsula, a week before a shipload of French colonists landed. The ship’s captain raised the Union Jack to confirm British sovereignty over the area.

NZ officially becomes British colony

New Zealand officially became a separate colony of Britain, severing its link to New South Wales. The North, South and Stewart islands were to be known respectively as the provinces of ‘New Ulster’, ‘New Munster’ and ‘New Leinster’.
