Ōtira tunnel opening

Image

A crowd gathers to celebrate the opening of the Ōtira railway tunnel on 4 August 1923. At the time the 8.5-km tunnel, which completed the important transalpine rail link between Christchurch and Greymouth, was the longest outside the Alps and the seventh-longest in the world.
