Southland rugby team c. 1888

Image

The Southland rugby team pose with two supporters in front of their team banner. This photo was taken in about 1888, shortly after the Southland union separated from Otago. This began one of New Zealand’s strongest inter-provincial rugby rivalries. The two sides have played more games against each other than any other representative teams in New Zealand. Southland’s rural traditions are seen as symbolising grassroots rugby around the country.
