It is not an ad - it is a menu cover designed by Walters c.1947. In 'GORDON WALTERS : PRINTS + DESIGN' (2004) William McAloon wrote:
... its linear design shows his strong interest in surrealism at the time, particularly the work of Paul Klee.
Indeed, the design is by Gordon Walters, as indicated by Hamish Thompson in his book 'Coverup: The Art of the Book Cover in New Zealand' (Auckland: Godwit, 2007). He dates the menu c. 1947. Walters appears to have exhibited at the French Maid Coffee House in 1941–2, 1944, and 1947.
At an educated guess I would suggest that this gorgeous Miro-inspired graphic for the French Maid Coffee House is a late 1940s design by renowned New Zealand artist Gordon Walters (1919-1995) who exhibited there in 1947. I don't think this has been pointed out by anyone before.
