Te Kooti's sacred house at Te Whaiti

Image

Eripitana, Te Kooti’s house at Te Whāiti, was intended to be one of the most ‘sacred worshipping whares in the Urewera country’, but was abandoned because of an ill omen in the carving.

Thomas Ryan’s drawing shows the front of the whare, with elaborately carved amo, pare and tekoteko. ‘Ko Whakaari Eripi’ is incised on the sloping maihi.
