Kaimai air crash memorial

Image

On 3 July 1963 a DC-3 airliner crashed in the Kaimai Range, Bay of Plenty. All 23 passengers and crew were killed in what remains the worst air crash within New Zealand.  This memorial, at Gordon, 4.3 km south-west of the crash site,  was dedicated on 5 July 2003 to mark the 40th anniversary of the accident.

Since this photo was taken the plaque - which originally stated it was 9 km from the crash - has been corrected to read ‘4 kms’.
