Storm damage to the Rangatira

Image

Although they were typically called ferries, the Lyttelton–Wellington vessels were big ocean-going ships, well used to battling the Roaring Forties off the Canterbury Coast and in Cook Strait. Heavy seas sometimes caused minor damage and often forced the ferries to reduce speed. This image shows damage to the first Rangatira after a storm in 1951.
