Featherston camp

Page 2 – Featherston camp death register 1915–19

This transcription of the Featherston camp death register (Archives New Zealand, Ref WA 232 22) lists soldiers who died during their four months’ training at Featherston camp (January 1916-November 1918), either at the camp itself or any other place. It also includes men who died while the camp was being built (August 1915-January 1916), camp staff, and those who died there after the war when the camp was a military hospital and prisoner of war camp (November 1918-December 1919). Many, including the nurse Mabel Wishaw, died during the flu pandemic of November 1918.

You can download a spreadsheet with more information from the register about those listed, this will also allow you to sort the information by different fields.  Extra information has been included from Cenotaph, Commonwealth War Graves Commission and PapersPast. Links on a person’s surname generally go to their record on the Cenotaph database. A digital copy of the orignal death register is also available from Archives New Zealand

Private Thomas William Spence King, found his original headstone, the one the family bought before CWGC one came many years later, a whole pile under the nearby trees at Featherston, the majority today of the stones are now in a Wall at the Cemetery near the Obelisk, but only the soldiers that died of Influenza, so Private King's headstone which has his brothers detail on it as well, is now at St John's Churchyard at Waimate North near the Mission House, his ancestor was John King from Swerford. Oxon. who came to NZ with Samuel Marsden in 1814. I have visited John's home village in UK, and was at the ceremony with King family some years back for the Blessing of the Headstone which sits next to his grandfather at the cemetery.

Am researching into the back ground of the soldiers buried at Featherston, if anyone can supply me with any material history please.. findings will go to local Museum. I do have some history of soldiers but need more! Finding the research so interesting.... thank you.
