New Zealand Steel’s Glenbrook mill, near Waiuku, south of Auckland, produced iron and steel from local ironsand (titanomagnetite) for the first time. In 2020 ironsand and coal were being used to produce about 650,000 tonnes of steel a year.
Glenbrook
Locality on the east side of the Waiuku River, 7km north-east of the town of Waiuku.
Meaning of place name
The school at Glenbrook is situated beside a small brook, which accounts for an earlier name, Brookside. About 1911 it was felt that the place should have its own special name, and two meetings were held, Glenbrook being the final choice.
