Hōhepa Te Ōtene Pura, from Mangamuka, Hokianga, signed Te Tiriti o Waitangi on 6 February 1840. Hōhepa married Rihi, the daughter of Te Rarawa chief Pōroa. During the Northern War of 1845–46 he and his people sided with government forces against Hōne Heke Pōkai.
