Page 3 – Employment Companies

New Zealand’s two employment companies, created in 1917, carried out labouring work behind the lines on the Western Front. The New Zealand (Divisional) Employment Company was attached to the New Zealand Division headquarters, and provided light work for soldiers in poor physical health who were classed as unfit for further military service. The New Zealand (Area) Employment Company was a stand-alone unit which undertook labouring work wherever it was stationed.
