Mitimiti
Meaning of place name
Lit: shallow water, or to lap. According to oral tradition, a battle took place in this area during which More Te Korohanga was slain. As he was a rangatira of great mana, he was dismembered on a flat rock - this is still there today - and eaten to absorb his mana. All the warriors of the victorious tribe wanted a piece of More Te Korohanga, but as there was not enough of him to go around, his blood was licked from the rock, giving rise to the name Mitimiti.
