Ari Burnu Memorial, Gallipoli

Ari Burnu Memorial, Gallipoli

Ari Burnu Memorial, Gallipoli.

The inscription is a quote from Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first leader of the Republic of Turkey. It reads:

Those heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives! You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.
Atatürk, 1934

After many years of wanting to visit this famous place with such a strong Kiwi connection, I was lucky enough to make the trip to Gallipoli in 2008. When I was there in early June, it was such a nice and peaceful day it's hard to imagine what the morning of 25/4/1915 must have been like for both the allied and Turkish soldiers. For any Kiwi who is interested in history I highly recommend making the trip. You won't regret it.
