The garden and walls around the central flagstaff were planned as a memorial for railway workers who died in the First World War but it appears that this was never completed. In 1999 the station building was sold and partly converted into student accommodation. Due to weather leakage problems a major upgrade had to be undertaken which resulted in the current Grand Central Apartments. The First World War roll of honour board is located on the promenade level. All suburban trains now use the Britomart underground station at the bottom of Queen Street.
