Dunedin cenotaph
Dunedin cenotaph, circa 1986. The lion at the base of the Dunedin memorial is characteristic of the work of sculptor Richard Gross.
The cenotaph appears to be Carrara marble. It is classically decorated and includes four large crosses and a bronze urn at its summit. The memorial is set in a large reserve which includes a statue of Queen Victoria, a plaque honouring the New Zealand recipients of the Victoria Cross, and Pohutakawa trees planted to remember VJ Day, VE Day, and the battles of Cassino, El Alamein, and the Atlantic.
Some of the plaques originally appeared on the Dunedin RSA building. They were moved to the cenotaph in 2001.
