Horse towing coal carts

Horse towing coal carts

Danny Laurie leads pit-pony ‘Speedy’, hauling a rake of empty trucks back to the mine in 1948. The skips used underground were much smaller than standard railway trucks, holding 0.6 tonnes. This image emphasises how much effort was expanded trucking coal and moving wagons. The development of hydraulic mining meant a large cost saving in transporting coal.
