Boer War commemorative jug

A white porcelain jug commemorating the South African ('Boer') War, 1899-1902. This jug was made in 1900 at the early Wellington pottery factory of Peter Hutson and Co. Only eight examples are known to exist.

The commemorative jug lists the first five New Zealand contingents and their respective commanders: First Contingent (Major Robin); Second Contingent (Major Craddock); Third Contingent (Major Jowsey); Fourth Contingent (Major Somerville); and Fifth Contingent (Lieutenant-Colonel Newall).

The front of the jug depicts a soldier with bandolier and rifle standing at attention in front of two crossed flags. Around a band at the top are the words: 'Whawhai Mo To Kanga Mo To Kuini Ake Ake Ake' (Fight For Your Queen Forever).

The jug is currently on display at the National Army Museum in Waiouru.
