POW Kodak camera

A 35mm Kodak Retina camera used in a prisoner of war camp by Gunner Wilfred (Curly) Weakly.

Weakly was captured at Sidi Rezegh during the relief of Tobruk in November 1941. He managed to keep the camera with him by strapping it to the inside of his leg. Following his capture, Weakly was sent to a prisoner of war camp at Udine, near Trieste, and then to Germany. In order to keep the camera hidden he stored it inside a water bottle made from Canadian dried milk tins.

The camera and water bottle are currently on display at the National Army Museum in Waiouru.
