Governor General Lord Jellicoe laid the foundation stone of the Egmont County First World War memorial in Ōpunake on 27 October 1921. The completed obelisk was dedicated 'In memory of our boys who fell in the Great War, 1914-1918'. It listed a total of 92 names. On Anzac Day 1950 the names of the two men from Opunake Borough who had been killed during the Second World War were added to the memorial.
