Ross South African War memorial
Ross South African War memorial.
The residents of Ross (pop: 614) and Tōtara and Southern Districts raised a memorial to John K. Allen of the 3rd New Zealand Contingent of the Rough Riders, who died of fever at Pretoria on 3 February 1901, aged 26. It is one of 11 South African War monuments erected to honour a single lost soldier.
The marble obelisk features ornate carvings of laurels and roses and the Latin phrase ‘Vincit Amor Patriae’ (Love of Country Conquers). A quarter of New Zealand South African War memorials used a Latin inscription.
