Sixth Contingent members on trek

Sixth Contingent members on trek

A cold night's sleep: members of New Zealand's Sixth Contingent sleeping out on the veldt (open plains) in South Africa, circa 1901.

Extreme temperatures made life tough for New Zealanders trekking on the veldt. Soldiers would often be forced to endure severe daytime heat, while at night they slept out in the open with only an overcoat to protect them from the freezing cold.
