The 'Limited' express train

In order to speed up travel times on the main trunk, in the mid-1920s the minister of railways, Gordon Coates, introduced North American-style ‘Limited’ expresses, which made fewer stops and hauled lighter loads. The Daylight Limited never achieved the iconic status of its overnight counterpart, the Night Limited, but it was a popular feature of New Zealand Railways’ summer timetable in the 1950s, when this colourful publicity brochure was issued.
