The first Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall was opened by Colonel R. Heaton Rhodes, MP, on 3 August 1917. A roll of honour which listed six names from the South African War (including Colonel Rhodes himself) and 35 names from the First World War was unveiled in the hall on 1 December 1917 (another 31 names were added after the Second World War). The brick-built hall was closed because of earthquake risk in September 2010 and subsequently demolished. A new hall was opened on 11 November 2018. This displayed both the roll of honour from the original hall and photographs of servicemen who had given their lives.
