Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:
Evelyn Penelope Valpy was born on 18 November 1862 in Dunedin, New Zealand. On 15 December 1886 she married Harry Percy Oakden, an auctioneer, with whom she had six children. Harry Oakden served in the First World War in the Medical Corps, and Evelyn is listed as his next of kin. By that time the couple had moved to Devonport, Auckland. Evelyn died 27 February 1938 in Hamilton.
