Flora Black was born on 16 June 1848 at Iona, Argylshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Black, a shoemaker, and Janet McGilvray.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1859 on the Sevilla and they settled at Kuri Bush, south of Dunedin.
Flora married John Thomson on 2 March 1869 in the Green Island parish – they had nine children and lived in the Owaka District.
When Flora signed the suffrage petition the family were farming at Tahatika near Owaka.
Flora died at her home on 2 April 1901 and John died in 1914, they are buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
