Information about this memorial from the Manukau City Council

The Howick and Pakuranga war memorial

Manukau County Council minutes record that: "[On 14 September 1920] [re] Pakuranga Memorial: Mr F. Jamieson wrote on behalf of the memorial committee, asking if the Council would provide a gate and posts to the entrance of the Stockade Hill Park, where the memorial monument is to be erected ...", Manukau County Council, Minute Book, June 1918 - March 1921, Minutes nos. 1210 [see also minute no. 1271] (Manukau City Council archives, W2635/165/1).

Curiously, no local source preserves the date of the unveiling ceremony. A lengthy account of the ceremony can be found in a clipping preserved in the Alfred Judkins scrapbook at Howick Historical Village ('Howick War Memorial: Unveiling by Governor: Obelisk on Historic Site'). This is undated and unsourced, but provides internal evidence which allows the event to be dated at some time between 27 September 1920 and 16 June 1921. So far attempts to trace the clipping to its source have failed.

In 1935 the Howick Ex-servicemen's Club also erected a flagstaff on the hill: "[the] flagstaff recently erected on Stockade Hill by the Returned Soldiers' Association ...", 'Howick New', Otahuhu News, 24/4/35, p. 4; 'Anzac Day Observance at Howick', Otahuhu News, 2/5/35, p. 4. For many years the obelisk served simply as the site for wreath-laying ceremonies, but in 1961 the entire service was held on the hill: "This year for the first time Howick's Anzac Day service was held outdoors, the complete service taking place on Stockade Hill..."
