Reko, the son of Puhirake, signed Te Tiriti at Tauranga in April or May 1840. A Christian convert and member of missionary Alfred Brown’s congregation at Tauranga, he was killed in fighting at Ōngare pā, Katikati. Reko’s nephew, Rāwiri Tuaia Puhirake, led Tauranga iwi at the Battle of Gate Pā.
