Agnes Bunting Strathearn Smith was born in 1871 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Smith, an auctioneer, and Jeannie Williamson.

She grew up in Dunedin and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Forth Street.

Agnes married Andrew Henry Nelson, a sawyer, in 1901 and they had three children.

Andrew died in 1932 and Agnes died on 11 September 1933, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
