Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:

Alice Mary Smith was the second daughter of William J Smith. In 1881 she married William Hodgson Barnicoat at Putiki Church. They lived in Keith St, Whanganui, and had three daughters; Helen Agnes (1882-1950, Wall), Kathleen Ida (1884-1886) and Phyllis (1887-, Riddiford). William was a solicitor and became a partner in the firm Messrs Borlase and Barnicoat, but died suddenly in 1909. In the same year Phyllis married and moved to Lower Hutt. By 1919 Alice had moved to Tinakori Road, Wellington. She travelled to London with Phyllis and died unexpectedly there on 6 January 1926.
