Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Carrie Dutton was born about 1865, probably in Stewart Island – the daughter of James Dutton, a sawmiller, and Jane. (See 137 Jane Dutton)

In the early 1870s the family moved from Stewart Island to the Owaka district where Carrie’s father opened the first saw mill in the district.

When Carrie signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Owaka.

She had an active part in local affairs singing at school soirees and church functions.

Carrie died at Owaka on 20 November 1958, she is buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
