Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Clara Elvina Hitchins was born about 1856 in Islington, London, England – the daughter of Richard Hitchins, a plasterer, and Frances Pullen.

She married Henry James Ladd, in London, in 1874 and shortly after they came to New Zealand.

They had six children by 1882 then they appear to separate. Clara had four children (who were registered under the name Ladd) with William Henry Christian Jacobs, an engine driver from Germany, before Clara married him in 1894. Another three children were born after their marriage.

The Jacobs lived in Walker St then later moved to Adelaide St, South Dunedin.

William died at Adelaide St in 1930 and Clara died on 16 May 1949 at Orokonui Home, Waitati. They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
