Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:

Clementine McDonnell was born in 1847, the fourth daughter of Captain Thomas McDonnell of the Royal Navy, an early Hokianga settler. Clementine married Charles Holmes Borlase, a solicitor, in 1869 in Whanganui. Charles was an Ensign in the Colonial Militia. They had Charles Howard (1870-), Emma Clemintine (1871-), William Rawoon (1874-), Edward Norris (1875-), Norah Charlotte (1877-), George Norton (1878-),  Florence Mary (1881-), Anna Kathleen (1884-) and Mary Wilmot (1887-). Widowed in 1903, Clementine moved from Whanganui to Auckland and died there in 1919.
