Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Eliza Fletcher Auchterlonie was born on 13 October 1841 in Fifeshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Auchterlonie, a shoemaker, and Catherine Fletcher.
She emigrated to Otago and, in 1869, she married James Beveridge.
They had eight children, two of who died in infancy, and James worked as a grocer and wine and spirit merchant.
James died in 1890 and when Eliza signed the suffrage petition she was living in David St, Caversham, Dunedin.
She died on 2 May 1909 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery with a son who had died the previous year.
