Elizabeth Broomfield Lees was born on 7 March 1839 in Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland – the daughter of Andrew Lees, a farmer, and Elizabeth Forbes.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1860 on the Pladda and they settled near the Catlins River in South Otago.
Elizabeth did not marry and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living in Owaka in South Otago.
She died at her sister’s home in Clinton, South Otago on 23 May 1917 and is buried in the Clinton Cemetery.
