Elizabeth Maria Kirkby was born in 1875 in New Zealand – the daughter of Joseph William Kirkby, a labourer, and Maria Hale.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Grosvenor St, South Dunedin.

She married Thomas Middlemiss, a widower and farmer, in 1911.

They lived in Mabel Bush in Southland and, although they had no children together they did adopt a son.

Thomas died at their home in 1940 and Elizabeth died on 19 July 1958, they are buried in the family grave in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
