Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth McKillop was born about 1857.

She married William Mason, a bootmaker, on 5 April 1878 in Balclutha.

William’s shop was destroyed by fire that year – in 1886 he applied for a licence for the Catlin’s River Hotel.

The following year William was declared bankrupt and he then opened a temperance hotel at Catlins River.

Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition while living in Owaka.

William died in 1930 and Elizabeth died on 7 June 1932 at her daughter’s home in Owaka, she is buried with William in the Owaka Cemetery.
