Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Lewis was born about 1853 in Staffordshire, England.

She married Thomas Moreton, a potter’s presser, in 1869 and they had seven children before Thomas died in 1882.

Their youngest child died the following year and shortly after the family emigrated to New Zealand on the Bombay.

Elizabeth appears to have family already living in North Otago where she settled as 'Charles Lewis' was given as guardian on the children’s school records.

Elizabeth married Charles Sutton in 1885 and she had a further seven children, one of who also died in infancy.

They lived in Whitstone and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she signed in, nearby, Enfield.

In later life they moved to Oamaru where Elizabeth died on 1 July 1940 and Charles died in 1949 – they are buried together in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
