Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Nichol was born in New Zealand in 1862 – the daughter of William Nichol, a farmer, and Jane.

She married Robert Muirhead on 17 March 1886 in New Zealand and shortly after their marriage they sailed for Australia.

They had two daughters in Victoria before they moved back to New Zealand in the early 1890s and had a further four children.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Mosgiel, south of Dunedin.

Robert died in 1936 and Elizabeth died on 21 October 1938, they are buried in the family grave in the East Taieri Cemetery.
